Our Costs

We only offer a bursary if we have funding or strong pledges in place to cover the full duration of each intern’s teaching degree. To reduce costs, we enlist volunteers or negotiate lower fees where we can, and we have built a collection of university books that we reuse every year. We spend significant resources on tutoring, mentoring and guiding our interns, to build relationships that have lasting impact. This means that we offer fewer bursaries than we would have with only paying university fees and setting up internships at schools. The interns’ excellent academic results, personal growth and the outstanding work that they deliver at their partner schools lead us to believe that our compassionate approach is vital to the success of our interns and Realema.

The average cost per intern per annum is between R95 000 and R115 000, depending on whether Realema provides the intern with accommodation support (when they don’t receive accommodation at our partner schools).

The total cost per intern for the four years to complete a teaching degree is therefore around R400 000.

We will only offer a bursary if we have donations or strong pledges in place to cover the four years to complete a teaching degree.

Our partner schools pay the interns’ stipends, and they sometimes also provide accommodation and food.

“Being a part of the Realema family remains a profound privilege. My transition at St Benedict’s from the Preparatory School to College has contributed greatly to my personal and professional growth. This experience thus far has demanded greater confidence in lesson preparation, delivery and administrative tasks. Balancing numerous responsibilities has fostered a commitment to excellence; pushing me to go above and beyond.
Through this internship journey, I have expanded my teaching philosophy and skill set – continuously striving to embody the qualities of a modern educator. Applying theoretical knowledge acquired over the years has been immensely gratifying, as it enhances my effectiveness in the classroom. In essence, my journey with Realema has been both demanding and fulfilling, laying a strong foundation for my future as an educator.”
