Clarify the role of interns at your school

School Management Hub Preparing the school community Clarify the role of interns

This tree reminds us that classroom-ready teachers are developed through intentional opportunities and experiences.

With this in mind, how will you define the role of interns at your school so that their responsibilities support their growth as future teachers?

Consider the following questions:

1

How will the role of an intern differ from that of a teaching assistant within your school context?

Consider providing interns with intentional classroom and extra-mural experience that develops them in a phased manner and builds confidence, so that they become the kind of teachers that you would employ.

2

How will substitution duties remain appropriate to interns' phase, experience, and development?

Interns can provide valuable support with substitution when teachers are absent. Where possible, these duties should be aligned with the intern's phase, experience, and areas for growth. At the same time, it is helpful to ensure that interns also have protected time with their Mentor Teachers for observation, guidance, and opportunities to develop their classroom practice.
