DECIDE how mentorship will work in your school context

School Management Hub Preparing the school community Decide how mentorship will work

The LaunchPad provides guidance for intern development and the mentorship process, but each school is unique.

It is important to establish how mentorship will be organised in your school so that mentor selection, expectations, and support are clear from the start.

Consider the following:

1

What qualities, experience, or capacity will mentor teachers need?

Consider both teaching experience and the personal qualities needed for mentorship, such as approachability, consistency, patience, and the ability to give clear feedback.

2

How will mentor teachers be identified?

Decide whether teachers should volunteer, apply, or be identified by school management.

3

What support will mentor teachers need for mentorship to feel manageable, meaningful, and valued?

Mentors will need time to meet with interns, observe practice, provide feedback, and access guidance that supports the mentoring process.

4

How will mentor teachers be introduced to the LaunchPad and supported in understanding the mentorship process?

Consider what guidance or orientation mentor teachers will need to understand the LaunchPad and use it purposefully in their mentoring role.

5

How will mentorship be recognised within the school’s expectations, appraisal processes, or professional culture?

Consider how mentorship responsibilities will be recognised within staff expectations, appraisal processes, or other areas of professional responsibility.
